Devlog 5 - From sketch to map!

Another two weeks another devlog!

I wish I'd gotten more done this week, but what can you do? I'll try to be better next time! I am going to push my devlogs back to once a month instead of every two weeks. With how slow I've been, it's hard to find stuff to talk about. Pretty soon I'll be getting into stuff I don't really want to spoil new players on!

Anyway, remember my sketch from last week?

Yeah, that one! I finished mapping the entire thing since last time and set up the two puzzles/quests you have to do to progress in the dungeon. Let's show off the before and after because that's pretty neat! I took 3 screenshots of various parts of the map to show off.

First we have not!Sans the skeleton! I accidentally colored him blue the first time and gave him a blue sparkle in an eye socket until my beta-testers were like uhhh isn't that Sans?? And of course, it was. But now he's red! Fixed! In my defense, I meant to make his cloak green but with all the lighting he looked blue. The sparkle has no defense. Can you find out where on my sketch this is? The skeleton dude is a very poor stick figure, but I did preserve most of my chicken-scratch details!

And then we've got more puzzles! Vera from the castle made this herself to keep phantoms entertained and to stop them from leaving the catacombs. Too bad it's stopping you too. From the original sketch, we see we've got 4 flame things instead of the 3! Even little things can change, but I'm generally very good at sticking to my sketches.

And lastly, the room that's kinda at the bottom of the sketch! As you can kinda see, I had a little trouble with the sketch (the thing that needed to be centered wasn't), but I managed to rectify all problems I had with it once I got down to actually mapping it.

It's always fun to see how you make small changes to things as you go. Sketches for maps are definitely a helpful baseline to help get the feel of a place before you even touch anything in-game. I get frozen a lot if I don't have a clear picture in my head, so this definitely helps!

Anyway, that's all from me! This week I hope to work on making new phantom monsters and the second boss. Hopefully by my next devlog, I'll have more to talk about! As always, thank you for reading!
