Devlog 4 - Bugs & Maps

Hey guys!

Battle testing is going great! Lorel still catches even me by surprise!

It's been another two weeks since my last post and I am yet again, trucking along! I wasn't able to meet my goal of being well into the next dungeon by this point, but that's all right! I do have the tiles ready to go, some puzzle ideas, and a general idea of how I want the map to look. One thing that kept me from this was preparing the next build for my beta-testers. Which of course, means bugs that weren't there before decide to rear their ugly heads.

One in particular I still have no idea why it happened which is frustrating! Beat the boss in one turn, the bouncy diamond indicating "click to continue" remains. Take your time on the boss (and you will; there is no way to beat it in one turn unless you're me), and it MAY disappear (once it didn't! Yet I did nothing to fix this supposed bug). So I had a very frustrating few days trying to figure out WHAT caused it and it's still frustrating because I have no idea how to fix it for sure!

When Star Stealing Prince originally released, I had a same bug-I-don't-know-how-to-fix where it would just crash to desktop. So far, RPG Maker MV is avoiding that, but I'm still incredibly worried something like that will crop up again.

Anyway, let's talk about something more fun! Designing dungeons! I'm not the biggest fan! What is unique about this game though is I do have old dungeons I am obviously remaking, so it's a little different than making a dungeon from scratch. I know where all the big pieces are, I just have to make them nicer. The original catacomb dungeon was a HOT MESS, believe me. I'm looking at the original maps and going "why did I do it this way". I'm sure everyone has bouts of looking back on old things and thinking the same thing.

How I start making dungeons is pretty simple. I break out my unofficial RPG Maker dot journal, go to a page I don't have filled with notes like "2 right, 1 down" because I WILL forget where I wanted the character to move, and get to sketching! Here is the sketch from the dungeon I'll be working on over the next week or so:

It's a hot mess! How am I ever going to make a dungeon out of that blob?! It must be magic!

It's obviously not magic. I know what it means, even if it looks very messy right now. Hopefully, by the next devlog, I'll be able to do a before and after shot so you can see how the sketch transforms into the dungeon proper!

Anyway, that's it for today. Thank you so much for all who have downloaded and played the game so far! It means a lot to me!

dot paper instead of grid paper is inspired
it never occurred to me to draw out maps like this, with the fronts of the walls showing; that's really helpful

Since it's more or less how it'll appear in the game, the sketch like this definitely helps visualize it! I'm glad it's helpful!
